Mattern Matters Fall Newsletter 2022 Editorial 2022-10-20T03:27:57+00:00

Hello, my name is Rob Mattern and I am the President and Founder of Mattern.

Twenty-five Years.

I am pleased to say that in this issue, we celebrate twenty-five years in business which, in hindsight, is remarkable especially considering the fact that 65% of new businesses fail in the first 10 years.  I grew-up in a family-run business and at the time of starting Mattern, that business was celebrating 110 years in business, so I guess I got lucky with genetics.

I often get asked what you need to start a business and to keep it going.  To start a business, you need a great idea to do something better or less expensive.  To keep it going, I always reply it comes down to two things:  great employees and great clients. You can’t have one without the other.  The rest of the stuff is secondary.

I do want to take a moment to thank all our clients through the years, many of whom are still with us.  And to all our employees – I couldn’t have done it without you. I also want to acknowledge and thank all the service providers that we work with in all the different service areas we cover.  I know we each have our job to do, but at the end of the day, your success makes us look good and for that we are grateful.

In this issue of Mattern Matters:

  • Celebrating our 25th Anniversary – I reflect on 25 years of outsourcing – the more things change, the more they stay the same.
  • We highlight Ben Schmidt’s excellent podcast on outsourced labor.  Labor is a challenge across industries – not just in legal.  We have been tracking how well your outsourcing providers have been doing in fulling their contracted outsourced hours.  Curious about which providers rank the best?  Give us a call.
  • On the IG front, we liken Information Governance to Groundhog Day.  Firms may experience the struggle of always trying to get their IG program to lift off – but we provide some strategies.
  • And finally, we introduce a new member of our team – Cory Riner

On the road and on the screen

  • By the time you see this newsletter, we will have completed our sessions “How to Not Be a Roadblock to your Firm’s Digital Transformation Strategy” and “Three Steps Your Organization Must Take to Achieve its Digital Transformation” at ARMA InfoCon in Nashville. Next up, we will be in New York City for the COO & CFO Forum where I will be on the panel “Performance, Tax, & Business Liability Considerations in Hybrid Work” with co-panelists Cecy Graf, Chief Financial Officer of Rimon PC, Geline Midouin, Chief People Officer of Shearman & Sterling LLP and Barbara Mica, Chief Operating Officer of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP.
  • On the screen, we are presenting a number of webinars through ARMA and ALA in chapters across the country that are open to all: members and non-members. Look for our upcoming emails and LinkedIn announcements on the topics and dates.

Until next time, stay safe.
